Any new and upcoming artist or band will know how important it is to get played on the radio when it comes to helping them realise their dreams as musicians. Radio play provides the platform to showcase your music to a large audience, and if the listeners like your music, they will often search for you on iTunes or Amazon. This is why it's important to have you music already live on iTunes before the 'official' launch date. When you get played on the radio you need to be ready for the impulse buyers.
The music industry is full of many struggling artists all looking for that big break. Getting radio play and exposure is not easy, so you have to know how to go about music promotion if you want to stand out from the crowd.
Here's a top 5 list of most popular places to find new music.
If you are an unsigned artist or band, you still stand a chance of getting played on the radio. Many radio stations play music from unsigned bands so all you need is to find out, which radio stations support unsigned bands & the names of the radio show/presenters. You can start with the radio stations in your local area first before you look further afield. Remember what will get you radio play is the quality of the song and the quality of its recording. You have to make sure you get these two things right before you approach any radio station if you want to be taken seriously.

You will also have to research your local radio stations thoroughly, so that you know the kind of music they play and if your style of music would fit their playlist. There are those radio stations that play only a certain genre of music and if it's not your style then there is no need to contact them. The community radio stations are a good target since it's their policy to promote local talent as much as possible, so they will be more receptive of your request for radio play.
Once you have identified an appropriate radio station to approach with your demo, you should arrange to talk to the station manager or programs controller, so that they give you a breakdown of their requirements for playing music from unsigned artists. You can also identify a presenter who is friendly to new artists and have a chat with him/her about getting you radio play. Mostly, you will be required to provide the radio station with a high quality demo CD and a brief write-up on you as an artist or band, your type of music, and contact information (It’s important you don’t forget to include the contact info!). You should remember to follow up with the radio station on a regular basis so that you learn the fate of your submission and get feedback. If you’re not played on the radio station playlist you need to find out why.
